産婦人科学教室における医療研修および基礎研究 /
Medical training and basic research (Obstetrics and Gynecology)

Participant from : University of the Philippines – Philippine General Hospital (Philippine)
Program period : May 7 – November 7, 2019

When I finished my training in Reproductive Medicine back in Philippines, I knew that there is still a lot to learn in this very interesting field. I came across Oncofertility and I realized that this is one important subspecialty lacking in our country. With high hopes of helping my fellow countrymen, I tried seeking further training. I have always heard the amazing works of Professor Nao Suzuki in the field of Oncofertility, and it was a big surprise that he accepted me in his team.
It was my first time to visit Japan, and I fell in love in this beautiful country. They possess a very lovely culture. They are all nice, and hardworking. I never felt alone because they are all genuinely caring. Professor Nao and his team took care of us and made sure that everything is okay. I was under the supervision of Dr Seido Takae, who is also a very kind and wonderful mentor.
My fellowship program allowed me to learn about oncofertility counseling and treatments. This includes COH protocols for cancer patients, ovarian tissue vitrification and even ovarian tissue transplantation. We also attended various conferences, both local and abroad. Aside from this, they allowed me to participate in basic experimental research, which I did for the first time!
In my 6 months of training, I have gained a lot of skills and knowledge. But it doesn't end with it. I gained many friends too. I am grateful of everything they have shared with me. I believe that all of these experiences will bring fruitful endeavors I could share back to my country. Last 2019, our country just launched Philippine Society for Fertility Preservation (PSFP). I am very happy to be part of it, where I can share what I learned from my humble mentor, Professor Nao Suzuki.

I am very glad to be able to come to St. Marianna Medical University for communication and study. As soon as we arrived in Japan, the teacher helped us plan the route and sent us to school. She also explained the environment of the hospital and dormitory carefully, which eliminated our perturbed in a foreign country. The comfortable dormitory gave us a very good rest.
In the hospital, I met new teachers and classmates. The teachers are very concerned about me. They gave us lectures and explained the operation to us. Students were also willing to help me, such as took us familiar with the hospital environment, and conveyed the teacher's teaching information. Although there were sometimes a little language barrier, we could always find ways to overcome difficulties and understand each other. I was also exposed to new scientific research concepts and clinical skills. I agreed that we should lay a good clinical foundation before doing scientific research, and marveled at the design of some surgical instruments which make the surgery complete quickly and well.
I had a very good time here. I will miss this time. I hope to have a chance to come back again.

It’s been a wonderful experience for me at St. Marianna University School of Medicine this month. Every teacher has been kind and patient to me. I saw many operations which I haven’t seen in my hospital. I have to say thanks to the doctors in General Surgery department and anesthesiology. They were very enthusiastic to teacher me, show me, explain to me. And the dormitory prepared for us was terrific. What impressed me most was the harmonious relationship between doctors and patients, between doctors and nurses in Japan, which was desperately needed in my country. I have to say thank you to all the teachers who have helped me during the program. Really wish that the program can be longer.

産婦人科学教室における医療研修 / Medical training (Obstetrics and Gynecology)

Participant from : Ramathibodi Hospital (Thailand)
Program period : September 1 – 30, 2019

One month at St Marianna University School of Medicine was a great experience for me. I was a little bit surprised that my request of visiting there was accepted. Coping with fertility problems in poor prognostic patients were challenged and there were many patients there. Onco-fertility Clinic was my first priority and multidisciplinary care has been serviced, not only gynecologist but oncologist and psychiatrist also realized their fertility need as another goal of treatment. I met Professor Dr. Nao Suzuki, the ASFP president, and had discussed the situation of fertility preservation in my country that it has not been concerned because of many factors. Thus, I am going to investigate and improve the service on fertility preservation starting from my center. In infertility clinic, there were many ovarian insufficient patients treated holistically in both stimulation processes and psychologic support. I also had a chance to participate in the ovarian tissue cryopreservation workshop held by Dr. Yodo Sugishita and his colleagues, it was really graceful for me.
As a Thai foreigner with poor Japanese and English communication skills, medical staffs and embryologists were so kind and helpful. I truly appreciated your hospitality. This was my first time working experiences in outlander and it was really impressive. The corporate culture and working will have inspired my work life.

Before starting the program, I was worried about coming to Japan. Because Korea and Japan do not have a good relationship currently, I thought I may experience something bad in Japan. But I did not experience any unpleasant experiences while staying in Japan for a month. Everyone I met at school was really nice and I was really happy to be friend with students in Japan.
I feel sorry that I cannot speak Japanese. Although I could communicate through English and translator, I think I could talk more if I had studied Japanese.
Staying a month at St. Marianna is one of the best memories of my college life. I would like to thank everyone in St. Marianna for giving me this special memory. I will recommend this program to my juniors as well.

Medical training (Obstetrics and Gynecology)

Participant from : National University of Malaysia (Malaysia)
Program period : October 1 – December 31, 2019

In Malaysia, our oncofertility services are not well established. Therefore, I went to the 2nd Asian Society of Fertility Preservation (ASFP) congress in India. I had an opportunity to meet the brilliant and respectful ASFP president, Prof Dr. Nao Suzuki, from Japan. After expressing my gratitude and plan for Malaysia, he accepted me to be part of his oncofertility team in St. Marianna School of Medicine Japan. I was delighted at that time. I flew to Japan with empty skills and mind, knowing nothing about ovarian cryobiology. He and his team help plan my attachment in 3 months to ensure I will bring something good to Malaysia.
I was trained in a very educational manner and have been respectful as a Muslim doctor in Japan. The team is terrific in guiding me from “zero to hero.” I gain my training in the oncofertility field from clinical cases to conferences, reproductive centers, and operation theater. All in one, training equipped me with confidence and sufficient knowledge to contribute to my country.
I enjoy the Japanese environment during my attachment, mainly the work culture and the cuisine. I had the life experience of trying their traditional costume, enjoying food, and visiting the oldest temple in the Asakusa area. Im was also very excited to visit the “Gundam City” in Odaiba full with Gundam Robot. Im also enjoying meeting the most popular character in my country, “Doremon” museum in Kanagawa prefecture, which brings back my sweetest childhood memories. The Japanese sceneries with sakura flowers and building structure were unique and memorable.
Coming back to Malaysia, my network with the Japanese team remains strong. I always consult them via phone and video conference in managing cases related to oncofertility. The team is not only my mentor in the oncofertility field, but they are also now my extended family!

Professors, office staffs, student doctors treated us very kindly, so I felt comfortable when I staying in Japan.
I really want to say thank you for your school. Professors taught a lot of thing. In oncology, I learned what is best treatment for each cancers, and how to treat end-stage cancer patients. So I can have a chance to think how to live and treat patient as a doctor in the future. General internal medicine was also impressive too. Our country doesn't have this major, so learning about general internal medicine was interesting and teachers give us lots of information about what is general internal medicine, and future of medicine because of aging society. Giving us chance to participate home nursing was also good memory. Student doctors also help us adapt in school life, and tell us Japanese student school life.
Korea and Japan has many similarities in public regime with medicine society. I see and feel a lot about how to deal with aging society. It was good opportunity to think how to live as a doctor. Thanks to the help of the school, I'm expanding my knowledges a lot. I made unforgettable memories for my life in St. Marianna hospital.

The exchange program at St. Marianna School of Medicine was a challenge for me to live in a foreign country for two weeks, while also a big opportunity to help me prepare for my own future through a different medical system experience from ours. The sad thing was that I had missed to practice department of pulmonology and pediatrics, which I originally wanted to experience. One thing I had heard about the trend of Japanese hospital system is shortage of hospital beds, as the aging population has increased. The Japanese government suggested "death at home" as an alternative. So, it is more common for elderly people to stay in nursing homes.
It would be better if I had a chance to observe Japan's nursing home and see how it was run.
However every moment I had in St. Marianna School of Medicine inspired me and gave me chance to think about being doctor. For example, in the oncology department, all doctors tried hard to led the education activities through conferences with nurses every morning for active exchange of opinions to manage side effects of cancer patients. Also, in outpatient clinic, rather than persuading patients, they only confirmed and reminded their patients once again that information on relapse rates had been properly understood, and I felt it was important for doctors to have an attitude of respect for judgment on patients.
