SMU English Café with Dr. Meng Lingbo (July 1, 2022)

2022年7月1日(金)にSMU ENGLISH CAFÉを開催しました。今回は2019年から本学に大学院生として留学中のDr. Meng Lingbo（孟令博）をお招きし、学生5名と交流を深めていただきました。コロナ禍ということもあり、前回同様、少人数での開催となりました。
今回は、孟先生のスライド資料を基に、中国と日本の医学教育の違いについてお話しいただきました。中国では医師になれるまでの時間や環境はもちろん、試験の方法や勉強時間、卒業後にできることまで日本と異なり、学生は驚いていました。特に、今回は不妊治療研究をしていらっしゃる孟先生のお話しだっただけに、「将来子供を設けたいと思うか」という問いに、それぞれの価値観を共有しながらも大変興味深い意見が多数上がりました。孟先生が都度学生に話しかけつつ発言を誘導し、ご自身のお父様や鈴木センター長が大学教授になられた経緯などをスライドに盛り込みつつお話いただきました。また、孟先生のプライベートについてもお話し頂き、最後まで楽しく話がはずみました。はじめは緊張してなかなか会話が続かない学生たちでしたが、孟先生の優しくユーモアのある対話のおかげで、当初の予定時刻を大幅に超えて楽しい集まりとなりました。

We had our second English café with Dr. Meng Lingbo, a Doctorate candidate at SMU, on July 1, 2022. Due to the pandemic, we could allow a limited number of students. Five students and three faculty members enjoyed Dr. Meng’s presentation and the discussion that followed. It sure was a very interesting session as we learned the differences between medical school system in China and Japan. When asked whether our students want children in the future, various thoughts were discussed. We learned that we share the same opinions about having children: less women want to start a family after marriage due to the high cost of living and raising children. Dr. Meng is from northeast part of China and decided to study at SMU after meeting Dr. Nao Suzuki, Director of the Center for International Exchange and Professor and Chair of Department of OBGYN. All in all, it was another good session to learn about a different culture in English.
