SMU ENGLISH CAFÉを開催

2021年12月15日(水)に海外からの研究者と本学医学部生の交流イベントとしてSMU ENGLISH CAFÉを開催しました。今回は2021年1月から約１年間マレーシアから本学の産婦人科学講座に研究員として研究留学していたDr. Sharifah Adibahをお招きし、4・5学年の学生４名と交流を深めました。コロナ禍ということもあり、当日はマスク着用の上ソーシャルディスタンスをとりつつ、少人数での開催となりました。

まず始めに、鈴木センター長からご挨拶をいただき、各出席者が順番に自己紹介を行いました。その後Dr. Adibahからマレーシアの医療現場の現状についてお話いただきました。マレーシアは他民族国家で、さまざまな人種と宗教が存在しているため、医療行為を行う際は患者さんの文化を理解しつつ方針を決定していくなど、文化の違いを交えながら詳細に医療現場の在り方をご説明いただきました。また、患者さんが医療機関にかかる際は、政府系病院（公立病院）や大学病院では患者さんが医師の性別を選ぶことができず、医療費もクリニック（開業医）や私立病院での診療時とは大きく変わってくるなど、日本との違いに学生たちは驚いていました。

一方で学生からは、マレーシアの文化や医科大学の在り方、女性医師としてのDr. Adibahのキャリア、医療現場で扱う器具の違い、Dr. Adibahご自身が日本で得た発見などを積極的に質問する姿が伺えました。はじめは緊張し発言を遠慮していた学生も、Dr. Adibahの優しくて気さくな話し方から、すぐに和気あいあいとした雰囲気で交流ができました。

The first SMU English Café held at the Center for International Exchange!

SMU (St. Marianna University School of Medicine) English Café was held at the Center on December 15, 2021. Due to the pandemics, we could not accommodate as many students or staff to attend the meeting, but we had an honor to welcome Dr. Sharifah Adibah, a visiting doctor/researcher in the Department of OBGYN to talk about medical situations in Malaysia. Malaysia being a multi-racial country, Dr. Adibah explained the cultural differences in medicine in Malaysia. One of the eye-opening information she gave us was that in Malaysia, although it is a Muslim country, there is no restriction for male doctors to treat female patients. If patients choose to go to government hospitals (public hospitals) or university hospitals in Malaysia, they cannot choose the gender of the doctor. If a female patient refuses to be treated by a male doctor, the patient is advised to go to a private clinic or hospital which is more costly. She also talked about a career path as a medical doctor in Malaysia as well as the differences and new findings she observed in Japan.

We hope to hold another one even via Zoom very soon, so we can make new discoveries in different cultures.
